An APEC seminar on “Strengthening Public-Private Partnership to Reduce Food Losses in the Supply Chain,” hosted by the Council of Agriculture(COA), will be held on August 5-7, 2013, at The Westin in Taipei. The seminar will explore strategies and action plans needed to reduce food losses, which will help achieve the goal of food security in the APEC region.

The Seminar will be attended by more than 130 participants from 18 APEC member economies including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and the USA.

Although many staple crops reach to their physiological growing limits, roughly one-third of the edible parts of food produced for human consumption gets lost or wasted globally. Therefore, how to reduce food losses and food waste has become a pressing issue in the world. It has been repeatedly underscored in both the 2010 Niigata and 2012 Kazan Declarations on APEC Food Security, as well as the 2012 APEC Economic Leaders’ Declaration. Accordingly, the COA initiated a project for addressing food losses in the APEC region. This five-year project has been endorsed by the member economies and funded by APEC.

Reducing food losses and food waste as well as finding practical solutions to enhance food security have since become a top priority for APEC.

The seminar focuses on four main issues:

l Main challenges in the world food losses and food security.

l Strengthening public-private partnership for reducing post-harvest losses.

l Best practices in reducing post-harvest losses.

l New steps and action plans for reducing post-harvest losses.

This seminar will pave the way for implementing the five-year project. It is expected to come up with practical strategies and solutions for reducing food losses as well as promoting public-private partnership opportunities in the APEC economies.
